You can close your LegalHelpzyn account and have your personal data deleted. This page explains how to ask, what is removed, and what the firm is required by law to keep.
How to ask
- In the app: Account → Delete my account.
- In the client portal: My details → Delete my account.
- By email: write to [FIRM EMAIL] from the address on your account, or call [FIRM PHONE].
We confirm the request within [3] working days and complete it within [30] days. You do not have to give a reason.
What is deleted
- Your sign-in. The account stops working immediately and nobody can sign in as you.
- Your name, email address, mobile number and postal address, except where they appear on a record listed below.
- Documents you uploaded that are not part of a matter we are required to retain.
- Any marketing or contact preferences, and any enquiry you sent that did not become a matter.
- Device tokens used for app notifications, so the app stops receiving them.
What is kept, and why
This is the part most deletion policies leave out, so it is set out plainly here. The firm cannot delete the following on request:
- Matter files. Where the firm has acted for you, the file is a professional record. It is retained for [FIRM RETENTION PERIOD, e.g. 7 years] from the close of the matter, and for longer where the matter concerns a continuing obligation, a title document, or anything still capable of being reopened.
- Tax invoices and payment records. GST law requires these to be kept for seventy-two months from the due date of the annual return for the year they belong to. A refund or chargeback would also be impossible to deal with without them.
- Anything a court or an authority has directed us to keep, for as long as that direction stands.
Retained records are taken out of ordinary use. They are not used to contact you, they are not used for any marketing, and they are held under the same confidentiality as any other client file. When the retention period ends they are destroyed.
If you have a matter in progress
We will tell you before closing the account. An advocate cannot simply stop acting in a live matter — there may be a hearing listed or a deadline running, and leaving you unrepresented would do you harm. We will agree how to hand over, and close the account once the matter is properly concluded or transferred.
What you can do first
Download anything you want to keep before you ask. Everything on your file is available from the client portal or the app, and once the account is closed you will not be able to reach it yourself.
